Equatorial Guinea will be looking to sign off with a win over Algeria in their third and final 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) group stage fixture on Wednesday.
Kick-off is at 6:00 pm CAT.
The Group E match is poised to be played at the Moulay Hassan Stadium in the capital city of Morocco, Rabat, which has a metropolitan population of over 1.2 million.
The Nzalang Nacional suffered a 1-0 defeat to Sudan in their second Group E match on December 28 and they are now winless in three matches across all competitions.
Equatorial Guinea placed fourth in the Group E standings with zero points from two matches and they have already been eliminated with a game to spare.
“We played to win against Sudan and it was a difficult match. We created chances to score but did not take them. In the end, we accept what happened and congratulate the Sudanese team, who played well and won,” Juan Micha, the head coach of Equatorial Guinea, said after his side’s defeat to Sudan.
“I do not rely on the fans to decide our line-up; I choose it according to my own options. Our team played better than the opponent in the first half. In the second half, we attacked, and sometimes you create chances but do not score, then you concede. That is what happened, and it is normal.”
Algeria, on the other hand, emerged as 1-0 winners over Burkina Faso in a Group E showdown on December 28 and the win extended the North African giants’ unbeaten run to 18 matches across all competitions under coach Vladimir Petković.
The Desert Foxes are occupying the top spot in the Group E standings after collecting six points from two matches and they have booked their spot in the Round of 16 with a game to spare.
“As a first, it has been a really hard match with two strong teams who fought for 90 minutes for everything on the pitch. We were slightly better in taking advantage of taking the opportunity we got,” Vladimir Petkovic, the Algeria head coach, said after his side’s win over Burkina Faso.
“I think Burkina Faso will be successful if they continue playing the way they did tonight. Congratulations to my team. Despite having lacked a bit of in the closing matches, we continued working hard and secured the victory and qualification.
Equatorial Guinea and Algeria have met three times across all competitions since their maiden meeting in January 2022.
Each team has recorded one win and the other match ended in a stalemate in their last meeting.
They drew 0-0 in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier at the Estadio de Malabo in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea, in November 2024.
