The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has opened an investigation into the events that unfolded after the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations quarter final clash between Algeria and Nigeria on Saturday.

This is according to African football journalist Micky Junior.

Nigeria claimed a 2-0 victory at the Stade de Marrakech, advancing to the tournament’s semi-finals thanks to second half goals from Victor Osimhen (47’) and Akor Adams (57’).

Tempers flared after the final whistle as Algeria players and technical staff confronted referee Issa Sy and match officials on the field before following them down the tunnel as the confrontation continued.

Videos of the incident have since been circulating on social media.

The governing body will announce any disciplinary measures after the investigation has been completed.

According to Micky Junior, the Algerian FA is set to launch a complaint of its own involving the officiating of the fixture, claiming that a clear penalty was denied, several of the referee’s decisions were questionable, the referee refused to shake hands with Algerian players after the match, and that Algerian journalists were attacked in the tunnel.

This is the second piece of controversy involving the Algerian team at this edition of the continental showpiece after an Algerian player mocked a Democratic Republic of the Congo fan imitating and paying tribute to the country’s first leader, Patrice Lumumba, in their round of 16 clash.
