Mamelodi Sundowns has published a statement condemning the behavior of “a few ill-disciplined supporters” following the club’s 2-2 draw with Al Hilal S.C. in the CAF Champions League last Friday.
The Brazilians were forced to settle for a point after an impressive display from their opponents at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria. Al Hilal managed to net twice and hold the hosts to a point with only 22 per cent possession, three shots – two of which were on target – and just one corner.
The club’s supporters are expressing increasing frustration following a lack of domestic success in cup competitions. Masandawana failed to reach the finals of both the Carling Knockout and MTN8 this season.
In addition, they were not in top spot on the Betway Premiership table at Christmas for the first time since 2019 and are level on points with Orlando Pirates, who have a game in hand.
The statement, which was released on Tuesday morning, reveals that members of the technical team were disturbed while attempting to leave after the game.
“Mamelodi Sundowns condemns the behaviour and conduct of the few ill-disciplined supporters who were disrupting members of the Sundowns Technical Team as they were leaving the stadium after the Sundowns and Al Hilal match,” the statement reads.
This includes the club’s technical director, Flemming Berg, who was hit by a drink thrown at him.
The club made absolutely clear that such behaviour would not be tolerated.
“Sundowns has always encouraged active supporter participation and engagement, which must always be done with respect and courtesy.
“Mamelodi Sundowns will not tolerate any threats, illegal behaviour or intimidation by any of its supporters or fans at any of its matches. Appropriate legal or disciplinary proceedings will be initiated against those whose conduct is found to be illegal or contrary to the policies or rules of the Sundowns Supporters.”
Masandawana also looked to assure supporters that the team remains focussed on trying to win all competitions it is involved in.
“The Players and Technical Team of Mamelodi Sundowns are focusing on retaining the League Title and successfully competing in all cup competitions. This can only be achieved with the support and encouragement of the Mamelodi Sundowns Supporters.”
Sundowns will be back in action on Tuesday against Sekhukhune at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane as they aim to retake top spot in the Betway Premiership.
They will then travel to Rwanda to face Al Hilal in the second leg of the CAF Champions League tie on Friday.
