The Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) has condemned the sentencing of 18 nationals in Morocco relating to the chaotic 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final.
The group of Senegal fans were prosecuted in Rabat on Thursday for acts of “hooliganism” which included violence, damage to property, throwing projectiles and invading the pitch.
The 2025 AFCON final made headlines for all the wrong reasons after the Lions of Teranga left the pitch in protest after the referee awarded Morocco a controversial penalty deep into stoppage time at the end of the second half.
The game was suspended for 14 minutes as scenes turned ugly both on the pitch and in the stands before Sadio Mane eventually persuaded his team-mates to return to the field of play.
Nine supporters copped a one-year prison sentence, six more received six months and the other three were sentenced to three months.
Reacting to the ruling, FSF communications committee president Bacary Cisse told the AFP news agency: “We express our profound dismay and distress following the verdict.
“This incomprehensibly harsh decision has provoked widespread outrage.
“Clashes occur in numerous stadiums around the world, including every weekend in Morocco, without resulting in such sanctions. The treatment of these supporters therefore appears disproportionate.”
