Bundesliga outfit RB Leipzig has announced that it will travel to South Africa and tackle Mamelodi Sundowns as part of the team’s post-season tour.
The clash and the tour were announced in a press release on Monday evening.
The post-season tour will be the German club’s third major international tour after previously traveling to the USA in 2024 and Brazil in 2025.
The two teams will meet at the Lucas “Masterpieces” Moripe Stadium in Atteridgeville on 29 May, with the fixture kicking-off at 8pm CAT.
“This encounter brings together two football cultures known for professionalism, talent development and innovation – and sets a strong signal for sporting exchange between Germany and South Africa,” the statement reads.
“South Africa is a particularly exciting football market and a culturally impressive destination for RB Leipzig and the Bundesliga. The passion with which football is lived here fits perfectly with our goal of inspiring people around the world with our intensive and attacking style of play, as well as with our football as a whole,” said RB Leipzig General Manager Johann Plenge.
“For us, this trip is a valuable opportunity to engage with South African fans, gain insights into the local football culture, and continue to expand our international identity.”
The venue for the friendly clash, the Lucas Moripe Stadium, ties back to the Bundesliga as the stadium was used by Germany as a training facility during the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
Hlompo Kekana, Mamelodi Sundowns ambassador and former captain, believes the fixture gives the opportunity to showcase both the country’s culture and game.
“We have just taken on some of the biggest clubs globally and the tour gives us an opportunity to not only showcase South African football flair but the country’s hospitality and Atteridgeville’s rich history,” said Kekana.
“We cannot wait to display our style of play – shoe shine and piano – to the world, once again.”
Sundowns are no stranger to playing foreign opposition, having recently competed in the FIFA Club World Cup in 2025. In addition, Masandawana hosted Barcelona in a friendly match in 2018, in which Kekana captained Sundowns.
