Confederation of African Football (CAF) President Dr Patrice Motsepe has announced increases in the prize pots for both the CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup.

The winner of the Champions League now stands to win USD 6 million, which is a 50 percent increase from last season’s winnings (USD 4 million).

The winner of the Confederation Cup will receive USD 4 million, a 100 percent increase from last season’s prize of USD 2 million.

Since Motsepe took the reins of CAF leadership in March 2021, prize money for the Champions League has seen a 140 percent increase from USD 2.5 million to USD 6 million, while the Confederation Cup winnings have increased by a percentage of 220 from USD 1.250 million to USD 4 million.

Under Motsepe’s leadership, the continental governing body also introduced solidarity payments last season. These are given as financial assistance to clubs eliminated in the Preliminary Stages of CAF’s interclub competitions, totalling USD 50 000 per team.

This season, the financial assistance was increased by 100 percent to USD 100 000, resulting in a record-breaking 130 clubs from across the continent participating in the qualifying rounds of CAF’s interclub competitions.

Overall, CAF now pays African Clubs over USD 42 Million per season in prize money and solidarity payments, an increase of 123.4 percent since Motsepe was elected.

These increases show the confederation’s commitment to growing football on the continent and increasing participation, making its competitions available to more teams and fans across the continent.
