The latest attack on a team bus in Ghana has led to the tragic death of Dominic Frimpong after Berekum Chelsea were travelling back home from their league match against Samartex on Sunday.

Frimpong was shot when armed men in masks opened fire on the bus as the driver reversed on the Bepani-Ghwasu road, in Ahirezu, which had been blocked off.

The 20-year-old winger died from his wounds, but no-one else on the bus sustained any injuries, with several players and staff taking cover in nearby bushes.

Frimpong joined the Blues on loan from Ghana Premier League rivals Aduana FC in January and made 13 appearances, scoring two goals in the process.

“On our way back to Berekum from Samreboi, our team bus was attacked by a group of armed robbers who blocked the road to prevent our passage,” the club said in a statement on Monday.

“Masked men wielding guns and assault rifles started shooting at our bus as the driver tried to reverse. The players and staff fled into nearby bushes to take cover.”

FC Savannah, Wa All Stars, Legon Cities and AshantiGold have all reported similar attacks in recent years, with this incident further highlighting safety concerns on roads in the country.

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has vowed to strengthen security arrangements for clubs on their travels to “prevent such tragic occurrences in the future”.
