The South African Football Association (SAFA) has suspended four members of its National Executive Committee (NEC) after a blow-up at the committee’s first meeting of the year last week.
Gladwin White and Emma Hendricks, representatives from the country’s Northern Cape province, alongside Monde Montshiwa and Orapeleng Setlhare from North West province were suspended after a SAFA Emergency Committee on Friday, according to SABC Sport.
Last week’s NEC descended into chaos after the suspension of several members was proposed on the meeting’s agenda. The incident began with a heated exchange of words before it devolved into pushing and shoving and eventually punches being thrown.
The now suspended White, Hendricks, Montshiwa and Setlhare are all members of Save Our SAFA (SOS), a faction within SAFA opposed to the reelection of current President Danny Jordaan for a fourth term. On the other side of the power struggle is the Football Transformation Forum (FTF), which backs Jordaan, according to the public broadcaster.
While the NEC must still ratify the decision of the Emergency Committee, those suspended have already indicated their intention to challenge the initial ruling against them, the SABC states.
