The last of the first leg fixtures of the CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup quarter finals took place on Sunday, producing two winners and two draws.
In the continent’s premier interclub competition, the Champions League, RS Berkane came from behind in the dying stages to secure a draw against Al Hilal Omdurman at the Stade Municipal de Berkane.
The Moroccan outfit conceded early as Abdelrazig Omer put the visitors ahead in the 13th minute, neatly finding the top right corner from point black range at the near post.
However, the hosts managed to level the score right at the death. In second half stoppage time, Hamza El Moussaoui was brought down in the Al Hilal box by Steven Ebuela, who saw his yellow card for the challenge upgraded to a red by VAR. Mounir Chouiar stepped up and made no mistake from the penalty spot.
RS Berkane will need to score away from home, at the very least, in the second leg if they are to stand any chance of progressing to the semi-finals.
Espérance Sportive de Tunis claimed a 1-0 win over continental giants Al Ahly at the Stade olympique Hammadi-Agrebi.
The only goal of the game came from the penalty spot through Mohamed Tougaï, sending goalkeeper Mostafa Ahmed Shobeir the wrong way and finding the bottom right corner in the 73rd minute.
Heading to Egypt with a delicate lead, the Tunisian league leaders face a tough task in their upcoming second leg as they seek to advance.
In the Confederation Cup, Maniema Union took control of their quarter final clash with USM Alger, winning 2-1 at the Stade du TP Mazembe.
The hosts opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 41st minute, with Clément Pitroipa giving his side the lead at half time.
USM Alger hit back in the second half as Ahmed Khaldi also converted a spot kick in the 53rd minute with a superbly taken strike.
Maniema retook the lead in the 66th minute through Exaucia Moanda, taking advantage of a set piece opportunity. Moanda was perfectly found at the back post with a pinpoint delivery and the centre-back prodded the ball into the back of the net.
With half of the job done, the Congolese side will need to remain focussed as they travel to Algeria for the second leg.
OC Safi forced a late 1-1 draw against fellow Moroccan outfit Wydad Casablanca at the Stade El Massira.
The Red Devils struck first after a goalless first half, opening the scoring through Ramiro Vaca in the 67th minute. The Bolivian’s right footed shot from the centre of the box following Walid Nassi’s cross could not be stopped.
However, OC Safi equalised in the 86th minute. Salaheddine Errahouli fired at goal from inside the box after the loose ball rolled into his path. His shot took a deflection off of Wydad defender Mehdi Benabid, and flew into the back of the net.
With the score level heading into the second leg, both sides will be fighting ferociously for a spot in the semi-finals and local bragging rights.
