Nigerian legend Ahmed Musa has officially announced his retirement from international football.
The former Leicester City and Al-Nassr winger has decided to retire from playing for the Super Eagles at the age of 33 as the West African country’s most capped player (111).
The decision ends his remarkable Super Eagles career that spanned nearly 15 years, having made his debut in 2010 and gone on to achieve a legendary status.
Musa, who scored 18 goals for Nigeria and lifted the 2013 AFCON title with the Super Eagles, confirmed his retirement from international football on Wednesday via his social media accounts.
“I wore this badge with pride for 15 years. From a 17-year-old boy answering every call to becoming the most capped Super Eagle with 111 appearances,” the former CSKA Moscow star wrote on Instagram.
“AFCON champion. Nigeria’s highest World Cup goalscorer. Captain. Servant. Believer. I gave everything. Thank you Nigeria… my heart will always beat green.”
Musa became the first Nigerian to score more than once in a FIFA World Cup match, after scoring twice against Argentina in the 2014 FIFA World Cup.
The Kano Pillars player is also the first Nigerian to score in two FIFA World Cup competitions, after scoring another brace against Iceland in the group stage of the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
He currently serves as the General Manager of Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) side Kano Pillars.
