DR Congo’s Sports Minister, Didier Bodimbo, made a bold statement during national celebrations following the Leopards’ qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The government official has declared that “Cristiano Ronaldo should cry when he faces DR Congo” during the biggest football tournament in the world set to be co-hosted by USA, Mexico and Canada.
This fiery warning came after the Leopards ended a 52-year absence from the tournament by beating Jamaica in the inter-confederation playoff.
It sparked massive street celebrations in Kinshasa and government rewards for the players, including houses and cars from President Félix Tshisekedi.
“Qualifying for the World Cup wasn’t easy; we fought hard,” Boodembo said.
“In our first match at the 2026 World Cup, Cristiano Ronaldo will be in tears.”
DR Congo has been drawn in Group K alongside Portugal, Uzbekistan, and Colombia, with their opening match against Ronaldo’s Portugal scheduled for June 17, 2026.
