The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has turned to Carlos Queiroz in the hope that he can improve the fortunes of the national team at the 2026 World Cup.

The Black Stars had qualified for the global showpiece under the guidance of Otto Addo, only for the GFA to sack him on March 31 following back-to-back defeats against Austria and Germany during the last international window.

Addo spent two years at the helm in his second spell, having also secured qualification for the 2022 World Cup as interim coach after Ghana beat Nigeria in the playoffs before being appointed on a permanent basis in December 2022.

Queiroz brings with him a wealth of experience on the world’s biggest stage after qualifying for the 2002 World Cup with South Africa, taking Portugal to the round of 16 in the 2010 and overseeing Iran’s campaigns in the 2014, 2018 and 2022 editions.

The 73-year-old also managed United Arab Emirates, Colombia, Egypt, Qatar and most recently Oman on the international stage.

Queiroz begins work immediately with the World Cup less than two months away in Canada, Mexico and the United States, where Ghana will come up against Panama, England and Croatia.

“I accept this mission with the same passion and commitment that have guided me throughout my career,” Queiroz said after taking over the reins on Tuesday.

“Ghana is a nation of talent, pride, and footballing soul. I arrive with respect for its history and belief in its future.”
