Ghana football legend Asamoah Gyan has given his thoughts on the Black Stars’ chances at the upcoming FIFA World Cup as they commence the tournament against Panama at the BMO Field on 18 June.

The Black Stars have been drawn alongside England, Croatia and Panama in Group L as they look to give a good account of themselves on the biggest international stage once more.

Ghana’s best showing in the tournament came in 2010, when they became only the third African team to reach the quarter-finals following a 4-2 loss on penalties against Uruguay. While the game was widely remembered for Luis Suárez’s deliberate handball to deny Ghana victory, the African nation captured the hearts of many football fans worldwide.

Reflecting on Ghana’s chances, Gyan believes that his country has been drawn in a ‘tricky’ group and that they have to qualify for the next round.

“When I see the World Cup, it brings back what we did. I’m happy. It’s an honour, but I didn’t do this by myself,” Gyan told Okay Africa.

“You cannot judge it. We had our time. What we have to do is support this new generation to achieve what we maybe didn’t do.

“Panama can surprise. Croatia has been in the finals and semifinals. It’s a very tricky group.

“First, qualify from the group stage. Then we take it step by step.”
