As one of Atletico Madrid’s star performers in the UEFA Champions League this season, Nigeria international Ademola Lookman moved closer to an impressive record set by fellow countryman.

Lookman has been an impressive addition to Diego Simeone’s side since joining from Atalanta during the January transfer window, scoring six goals while providing four assists in 17 games so far.

One of those were scored during Atletico’s triumph over Barcelona in the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday night, as Lookman netted in the 31st minute to give Atletico a 3-2 aggregate win in their second-leg clash at Riyadh Air Metropolitano.

Lookman thus took his tally to eight goals in the competition, with Victor Osimhen and Obafemi Martins being the only to Nigerian stars to have score more in the Champions League.

Osimhen, who has become one of Africa’s most prolific strikers in Europe during the last couple of years boasts 16 goals in the Champions League.

Martins on the other hand, scored nine-times in the tournament while he was widely regarded as one of the best African forwards of his generation.

With the semi-finals and a potential final on the horizon, Lookman now has the opportunity to surpass Martin’s nine-goal haul in Europe, while Osimhen continues to reign at the top of the pile as a regular goal scorer.
