    Pyramids, Belouizdad on the brink as Esperance slip up

    Sunday’s CAF inter-club group stage matches saw Pyramids and CR Belouizdad take a step towards booking their places in the quarter-finals.

    Pyramids need a point to advance to the quarter-finals with two matches left after thrashing RS Berkane 3-0 in a Champions League Group A match played in Cairo.

    Goals from Ahmed Atef, Mahmoud Zalaka and Nasser Maher saw the defending champions open a three-point lead at the top of the Group A standings, with Berkane placed second.

    In Group C, MC Alger moved up to third place after securing a 2-0 win over FC Saint-Eloi Lupopo in Algiers and they are just behind Mamelodi Sundowns, and Al Hilal Omdurman.

    In Dar es Salaam, Esperance Sportive de Tunis fought back from 2-0 down to hold Simba SC to a 2-2 draw and the result left the four-time African champions in second place in Group D, behind Stade Malien.

    The Confederation Cup action saw Maniema Union end Wydad AC’s 100% win record as the Congolese side claimed a 2-1 victory in Lubumbashi, but the Moroccan giants remain at the top of Group B standings.

    While USM Alger’s 100% win record in Group A was also ended by Djoliba in Bamako, but the Algerian side remain at the top of the table with 10 points from four matches.

    In Group C, CR Belouizdad thrashed Stellenbosch FC 3-0 in Cape Town to open a five-point lead at the top of the table and Otoho d’Oyo moved up to second place after edging out Singida Black Stars 2-1 in Brazzaville.

    Meanwhile, Zamalek claimed the Group D top spot after securing a 2-1 win over Al Masry in Suez, with Kaizer Chiefs, who claimed a 1-0 win over ZESCO United in Durban, slipping down to third place.

    Al-Masry (EGY) 1-2 Zamalek (EGY)
